Application & Usage Rate

Bench trials are recommended to determine optimal usage rate.

Prepare a 2-5% solution in water as described below. Recommended dose rate is 0.1 – 0.2 lb/bbl (50-100 g/hl, or 500 to 1000 ppm), which is equal to a 2.5 – 5 liters of a 2% solution, or 1-2 liters of 5% solution (wt/vol) per hl of beer. If this solution is to be used within a day of preparation, there is no need to add preservative.

Preparation of a 2% Solution:

When preparing a solution of BioHaze, a standard agitator is sufficient. BioHaze disperses easier in cold water, so it is best to use cold water, and sufficient time should be given stirring to ensure complete dissolution. Proceed as follows using standard high-speed agitator for 1000 liters of a 2.0% solution:

Place 264 gallons (1000 liters) of cold water in tank and turn on the agitator until a good vortex is formed.
Take 20 kg of BioHaze and add slowly at the vortex, ensuring no lumps are formed.
Stir until dissolved – time will be dependent on the water temperature and the speed of agitator. The cooler the water the easier it is to disperse, however dissolution is slower at low temperatures.
To prepare a 2% solution for 10 bbl of beer, use 1 kg of BioHaze dissolved in 50L of cold H2O; to prepare a 2% solution for 1 bbl of beer, use 100g of BioHaze dissolved in 5L of cold H2O.

Super Moss is a negatively-charged, red seaweed based, Kapa and Lambda carrageenan coagulant designed to attract the positively-charged, haze forming proteins together in the brew kettle and primary fermenter then settle out. Supper Moss has been formulated to mix rapidly in cold water. This feature allows it to be added directly to the bowl without creating fish eyes of undissolved carrageenan. Properly used, it can help reduce chill haze.

Irish Moss 1 oz

Irish moss is a specific type of algae that is used as a thickener in a variety of products. In beer making, Irish moss is added during the last 15 minutes of the boil, to help coagulate and settle out proteins. It improves formation and compaction of the hot-break, the gelatinous mass that forms after boiling and during cooling. Some users recommend prior rehydration in water, or a full hour boil with Irish moss, but common usage is 15 minutes in the boil.

Usage: 1 tsp. per 5 gallons

Koppakleer Tablets are a refined grade carrageenan product which is added to the wort in the kettle to enhance protein removal as the wort cools. Koppakleer requires only a short period of boiling to disperse and can be added to the whirlpool when it’s not possible to interrupt the boil or open the kettle.

SilaFine is an easy-to-use, vegan friendly fining agent that quickly creates crystal clear beer by removing yeast and haze-forming particles. SilaFine is a unique, negatively charged silica sol fining agent that binds with and positively charged haze active proteins and polyphenols as well as yeast cells. SilaFine does not target foam active head forming proteins, leaving beer foam in glass unaffected.

Use:
Add 10ml or 1 tbsp per 5 gallons of finished beer. Gently rouse the beer to fully disperse the clarifier. Most effective on beer that has been chilled below 39°F. If the beer has not cleared after 24 hours, a second dose can be added. SilaFine should be stored cool, but do not freeze.

Whirlpool:
SilaFine can also be used in the whirlpool at a rate of 0.5-1ml per gallon to achieve a quicker and more compact sedimentation in the kettle.

Additional Notes:
SilaFine is based on a special selection of commercial grade amorphous silicon dioxide, also known as silica sol, at a concentration of 30%. Silica sol is known by a few names in brewing including colloidal silica, acidified silicates, silicon dioxide, and silicic acid. Unlike some other silica sols, SilaFine is not treated with aluminum oxide. SilaFine is a pure mineral and complies with Reinheitsgebot German beer purity law. Do not freeze. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat.

The recommended shelf life is 12 months from the date the package is opened.
